DISCOVER THE SALAMANCA DISTRICT
An elegant, residential neighbourhood
Created in the 19th century as part of Madrid's urban expansion, the Salamanca district was designed to accommodate the aristocracy and upper middle classes. Its wide avenues lined with opulent buildings still bear witness to this history. Today, it is one of the capital's most prestigious and sought-after districts.
Why visit?
Salamanca is a luxury shopping paradise. Calle Serrano, nicknamed the "Milla de Oro" (Golden Mile), is home to the world's leading fashion and jewellery brands. But there's more to the district than its shops: museums, Michelin-starred restaurants and refined bars are also to be found here.
A brief history and anecdotes
The district owes its name to its promoter, the Marquis of Salamanca, who initiated its urbanisation in the 19th century. Anecdote: the Plaza del Marqués de Salamanca, in the heart of the district, bears his name in tribute to his founding role.
