VISIT THE WESTERN PARK
A large park in the heart of Madrid
The Parque del Oeste (Western Park) covers more than 90 hectares to the north-west of the historic centre. Developed in the early 20th century on former landfill sites, it is now one of the capital's green lungs, popular with locals and visitors alike.
Why visit?
It's the perfect place for a stroll or a moment of relaxation. Its tree-lined paths, rose garden (Rosaleda), sculptures and gazebos offer a soothing atmosphere. The park is also home to the Temple of Debod, an Egyptian monument unique in Spain.
A brief history and anecdotes
Created at the beginning of the 20th century by the engineer Cecilio Rodríguez, the park was partly destroyed during the Spanish Civil War, as it was on the front line. Anecdote: the Rosaleda in the park hosts a prestigious international rose competition every year, attracting gardeners from all over the world.
