VISIT THE LÁZARO GALDIANO MUSEUM

A unique museum in the heart of Madrid
Opened in 1951, the Museo Lázaro Galdiano is housed in the palace of Navarrese collector and publisher José Lázaro Galdiano (1862-1947). Located on Calle Serrano, this museum is less well known than the big names on the Paseo del Arte, but its intimate atmosphere and wealth of collections make it a real attraction.

Why visit?
The museum exhibits over 4,800 works: paintings, sculptures, jewellery, textiles, weapons, coins and precious books. Among the artists represented are Goya, Velázquez, El Greco, Bosch, Zurbarán and Murillo. It's an ideal place for art lovers to explore exceptional works in a quieter setting than the big museums.

A brief history and anecdotes
José Lázaro Galdiano was a great publisher and patron of the arts in modern Spain. His Madrid home, nicknamed the "Paradise of the Fine Arts", was bequeathed to the Spanish state along with his entire collection. Anecdote: some of the pieces in his collection are unique, such as a 15th-century jewel in the shape of a winged dragon and an illuminated medieval manuscript.
