VISIT THE MONASTERY OF THE DÉCHAUSSÉES ROYALES
A place of silence and remembrance
Founded in 1559 by Joan of Austria, daughter of Charles V, the Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales is a convent of Franciscan nuns in the centre of Madrid. Designed in a sober Renaissance style, it contrasts with the artistic wealth it contains.
Why visit?
The monastery houses an impressive collection of sacred art, Flemish tapestries, sculptures and paintings donated by royal and aristocratic families. Its cloisters, frescoes and Baroque staircases bear witness to a wealth of heritage that is often overlooked by visitors.
A brief history and anecdotes
The monastery was built on the site of the former palace where Emperor Charles V was born. Anecdote: for a long time, the convent's nuns lived in relative autarky, making jams and pastries that were discreetly sold to the public. Even today, visits to the convent are an opportunity to immerse yourself in this timeless atmosphere.
