DISCOVER MALASAÑA

A district steeped in history
Located around the Plaza del Dos de Mayo, Malasaña owes its name to Manuela Malasaña, the young heroine of the Madrid revolt against Napoleon's troops in 1808. It later became the heart of the Movida madrileña, the cultural and festive movement that accompanied the transition to democracy in the 1980s.

Why visit?
Malasaña has a bohemian, alternative atmosphere. It's the ideal district in which to discover trendy bars, original cafés, thrift shops and independent boutiques. Street art adorns the walls and the lively squares invite you to enjoy the local life.

A brief history and anecdotes
The Plaza del Dos de Mayo, the heart of the district, was the scene of clashes during the 1808 uprising. Anecdote: in the 80s, Malasaña was the favourite neighbourhood of Pedro Almodóvar and the Movida artists, who found a new freedom of expression here.
