VISIT THE ROYAL PALACE OF MADRID

A monumental palace
Built in the 18th century on the site of the former medieval fortress of the kings of Castile, the Palacio Real is a masterpiece of Baroque and neoclassical architecture. Although it is no longer the official residence of the royal family, it is still used for state ceremonies and official receptions.

Why visit?
With over 3,000 rooms, the Royal Palace is impressive for its artistic wealth: frescoes by Tiepolo, paintings by Velázquez and Goya, collections of clocks, weapons and musical instruments. The Throne Room, the Chamber of Charles III and the Royal Armoury are all treasures to be discovered.

A brief history and anecdotes
The current palace was built after the Alcázar burnt down in 1734. Anecdote: although it is the largest royal palace in Europe, the Spanish royal family now resides in the more discreet and functional Palacio de la Zarzuela.
