VISIT THE REINA SOFÍA MUSEUM

A museum dedicated to contemporary art
Opened in 1992 in Madrid's former General Hospital, the Museo Reina Sofía is now one of the world's leading museums of modern art. Its architecture is a blend of 18th-century buildings, modern extensions and bold structures designed by Jean Nouvel.

Why visit?
The museum brings together the greatest figures in 20th-century Spanish art. Here you can admire Guernica by Picasso, a universal icon against war, as well as numerous works by Dalí and Miró. Temporary exhibitions and contemporary installations complete this not-to-be-missed artistic experience.

A brief history and anecdotes
The museum is named after Queen Sophie of Spain, a great patron of the arts. Anecdote: Guernica was kept at MoMA in New York for over 40 years, in accordance with Picasso's wish that it should not be returned to Spain until after the end of Francoism. It was installed at the Reina Sofía in 1992.
