VISIT THE NATIONAL ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM

A must-see museum in Madrid
Founded in 1867, the National Archaeological Museum (MAN) is one of the most important in Spain. Housed in a neoclassical building on Calle Serrano, it contains treasures spanning more than 2.5 million years of history, from prehistory to the modern era.

Why visit?
The museum takes visitors on a journey through the major stages of Spanish and Mediterranean history. Its collections include the Lady of Elche, an Iberian masterpiece, Roman mosaics, Egyptian sarcophagi, Visigoth and Islamic objects, as well as medieval and modern pieces.

A brief history and anecdotes
The MAN was created to bring together archaeological finds from all over the country, against a backdrop of strong cultural modernisation in the 19th century. Anecdote: one of its masterpieces, the Lady of Elche, was discovered in 1897 in the province of Alicante and remained in France for a long time before returning to Spain in 1941.
