Lavapiés, to the south of the historic centre, is one of Madrid's most authentic and mixed neighbourhoods. A former working-class district, it has preserved its narrow, steep streets while becoming a multicultural and artistic living space.

A brief history and anecdotes
Its name comes from the expression wash feetin reference to an old public fountain where the locals used to wash themselves. Anecdote: Lavapiés is one of the most multicultural districts in Spain, with over 80 nationalities represented. It is also famous for its Tapapiésa combination of gastronomy and world music.
