VISIT MADRID'S PLAZA MAYOR
An emblematic square
Built in the early 17th century during the reign of Philip III, the Plaza Mayor is one of Madrid's most emblematic landmarks. With its harmonious proportions, continuous arcades and frescoed facades, it epitomises the architecture of the Habsburgs (Madrid de los Austrias).
Why visit?
It's a must for getting a feel for the Madrid atmosphere. You'll find cafés, restaurants and shops under its arcades, as well as a varied programme of festivals and events: concerts, exhibitions and the Christmas market in December.
A brief history and anecdotes
The Plaza Mayor has been the scene of bullfights, royal celebrations, proclamations and even public executions. Incidentally, it has been burnt down three times over the centuries, and its current appearance dates from the 1854 reconstruction. At its centre stands the equestrian statue of Philip III, the work of the sculptor Giambologna.
