Plaza de la Villa

VISIT THE PLAZA DE LA VILLA

A square steeped in history
The Plaza de la Villa is one of the few places in Madrid to have retained its medieval layout. Located just off Calle Mayor, it is surrounded by historic buildings that bear witness to the city's development since the Middle Ages.

Why visit?
It's a must for exploring old Madrid. Its stone facades, balconies and towers are a reminder of the days when Madrid was still a small walled city. The square is ideal for lovers of photography and history.

A brief history and anecdotes
The square was once home to the Concejo de la Villathe forerunner of Madrid's Town Hall. Anecdote: at its centre is a statue of Admiral Álvaro de Bazán, famous for having helped design the Invincible Armada in the 16th century.
