VISIT THE PLAZA DE COLÓN
A monumental square in the heart of Madrid
The Plaza de Colón is one of the capital's most emblematic squares. It pays homage to Christopher Columbus, with a neo-Gothic statue erected in the 19th century. The square is also an important meeting point and venue for official events.
Why visit?
As well as the monument to Columbus, the square is dominated by the gigantic Spanish flag flying above a 50-metre mast, a symbol of national unity. You can also admire the Gardens of Discovery (Jardines del Descubrimiento), adorned with modern sculptures evoking the great explorations.
A brief history and anecdotes
The statue of Columbus was inaugurated in 1885 and moved several times before finding its current location. Anecdote: the Spanish flag hoisted in the square measures 14 by 21 metres, and is considered to be the largest in the country.
