VISIT THE ROYAL BOTANIC GARDEN
A scientific and historical garden
Created in 1755 by order of Ferdinand VI and moved to its current location in 1781, the Real Jardín Botánico was designed by the architect Juan de Villanueva. Its mission was to study and disseminate knowledge about plants, particularly those brought back by Spanish scientific expeditions to America and Asia.
Why visit?
This garden is a place for relaxation, but also for scientific discovery. Its four orderly terraces are home to more than 5,000 species of plants and trees, divided into geographical and climatic zones. There are also greenhouses housing tropical and desert plants, as well as a library and a historical herbarium.
A brief history and anecdotes
The great Spanish botanical expeditions of the 18th and 19th centuries greatly enriched the collections. Anecdote: the garden still preserves specimens collected by the illustrious botanist Alexander von Humboldt during his voyage to America.
