VISIT THE CERVANTES INSTITUTE IN MADRID
A prestigious cultural centre
Founded in 1991, the Cervantes Institute's mission is to disseminate Spanish and Hispanic cultures throughout the world. Its Madrid headquarters, on Calle de Alcalá, occupy an impressive building dating from the early 20th century, the former headquarters of the Central Bank.
Why visit?
In addition to its educational and cultural activities, the Madrid headquarters hosts exhibitions, conferences and artistic events. The building itself, with its monumental façade and refined interiors, is well worth a visit. There is also a library specialising in Spanish and Latin American literature.
A brief history and anecdotes
The institution is named after Miguel de Cervantes, author of the famous Don Quixote. Anecdote: the former bank's vault, still preserved in the basement, is now used as an exhibition hall, creating a unique contrast between banking heritage and contemporary art.
