DISCOVER EL RASTRO DE MADRID
A historic market
El Rastro dates back to the 15th century and owes its name to the slaughterhouses that were once located in the district: the "rastro" (trace) referred to the blood marks left in the streets by the butchers. Today, it is one of the capital's must-visit flea markets.
Why visit?
It's a typically Madrid experience. With over 1,000 stalls, you'll find everything from antiques, vintage clothes and second-hand books to furniture, crafts, vinyl, souvenirs and unusual gadgets. Beyond the shopping, El Rastro is an immersion in Madrid's popular atmosphere.
A brief history and anecdotes
Over the centuries, El Rastro has been a meeting point for merchants, artists and local residents. Anecdote: many Spanish writers, including Ramón Gómez de la Serna, have described El Rastro as a living scene of Madrid's soul.
