VISIT ÁVILA

A must-see symbol near Madrid
Ávila is world-famous for its medieval walls, which encircle the old town for more than 2 km. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this Castilian city, perched at an altitude of over 1,100 metres, is a historic and spiritual Mecca. It is also the birthplace of Saint Teresa of Avila, a major figure in Catholicism.

Why visit?
The town offers an exceptional setting where every stone tells a story. Its ramparts, illuminated at night, create a magical atmosphere. There are also magnificent Romanesque churches, a unique fortified cathedral and charming squares where you can savour Castilian cuisine.

A brief history and anecdotes
Ávila's walls date back to the 11th century and include 88 towers and 9 monumental gates. Anecdote: they are so well preserved that long sections can still be walked. The city was an important religious and political centre in the Middle Ages, and today remains a major place of pilgrimage linked to Saint Teresa.
