VISIT THE MUSÉE D'ORSAY

An essential symbol of art in Paris

Housed in a former railway station built for the 1900 Universal Exhibition, the Musée d'Orsay is one of the finest museums in Paris. It is world-famous for its exceptional collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works.

Why visit?

It is the ideal place to admire masterpieces by Monet, Renoir, Van Gogh, Degas and Cézanne. The museum also offers collections of sculptures, photographs and decorative arts, in a spectacular architectural setting dominated by its large glass roof and monumental clock.

A brief history and anecdotes

Orsay station was inaugurated in 1900, but soon became obsolete for modern trains. Threatened with demolition in the 1970s, it was saved by being listed as a historic monument, then transformed into a museum and inaugurated in 1986. Its huge clock has become one of the most popular photo spots in Paris.
