VISIT THE PANTHEON

An essential symbol of Paris
Situated in the heart of the Latin Quarter, the Panthéon towers over Mont Sainte-Geneviève. This neoclassical monument, resembling an ancient temple, pays tribute to the great figures of French history. It is a solemn and impressive place of remembrance, both architecturally and historically.

Why visit?
The Panthéon is a unique place that combines architectural grandeur and contemplation. It houses the tombs of iconic figures such as Voltaire, Rousseau, Victor Hugo, Marie Curie and Simone Veil. Its immense dome also offers a breathtaking view of Paris.

A brief history and anecdotes
Commissioned by Louis XV in 1755 as a thank-you to Saint Geneviève after a cure, the building was originally designed as a church. Transformed into a Republican temple during the Revolution, it became a burial place for great men. Foucault's pendulum, installed in 1851 to demonstrate the Earth's rotation, can still be seen here.
