VISIT THE TOKYO PALACE
An essential symbol of Paris
Facing the Seine and the Eiffel Tower, the Palais de Tokyo is the largest contemporary art centre in Europe. Avant-garde, audacious and disconcerting, it offers a unique space for artistic experimentation, at the crossroads of the visual arts, performance, design and urban culture.
Why visit?
It's the ideal place to discover the latest trends in contemporary art. The exhibitions change regularly, offering an immersion in living, often participatory art. The raw, industrial atmosphere of the building adds an original aesthetic dimension to every visit.
A brief history and anecdotes
Built for the 1937 International Exhibition, the Palais de Tokyo was originally intended to house modern art museums. It was put to a variety of uses before becoming a contemporary art centre in 2002, with no permanent collection. Its name is intriguing: it has no connection with the Japanese capital, but refers to the former "avenue de Tokyo" (now avenue de New York).
