VISIT THE SEINE

An essential symbol of Paris

The Seine is much more than a river: it's the central axis around which Paris was built. It crosses the capital from east to west, revealing its most beautiful landscapes. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, its banks offer a magical walk through history, culture and romance.

Why visit?

Walking along the Seine or sailing on its waters is a different way of discovering Paris. The quays are full of life, the bridges are steeped in history, and the views of the monuments are breathtaking. It's one of the best ways to feel the soul of the city, between strolling and marvelling.

A brief history and anecdotes

The Seine has always played a major role: a trade route, a source of life, a natural frontier… Over the centuries, it has witnessed the birth of Lutetia, the great Haussmann works and memorable floods. The word "quai" comes from the Old French   caimeaning "lifting of stones".
