VISIT THE CONCIERGERIE
An essential symbol of Paris

From the 13th to the 14th century, the Conciergerie served as a royal palace before becoming an administrative centre and state prison. During the Terror, it housed more than 2,500 prisoners, including Robespierre, Danton and above all Marie-Antoinette. Its name comes from the "concierge", the officer in charge of the administration of the building.
