The Comédie-Française

VISIT THE COMÉDIE-FRANÇAISE

An essential symbol of Paris

Located a stone's throw from the Palais-Royal, the Comédie-Française is one of the oldest theatres in the world still in operation. Founded in 1680, it embodies French theatrical excellence and perpetuates the legacy of Molière, whose historic home it is.

Why visit?

It's a legendary venue for all lovers of French theatre and culture. As well as attending a play from the classical or contemporary repertoire, you can discover a sumptuous Italian-style auditorium, a place steeped in history, and a unique institution with its permanent troupe: the Troupe des Comédiens-Français.

A brief history and anecdotes

The Comédie-Française was created by royal decree under Louis XIV in 1680. It moved to the Salle Richelieu in the Palais-Royal in 1799. Molière was not a member of the Comédie-Française (he died before it was founded), but he is its guardian figure: his chair is still kept backstage, like a talisman that no-one is allowed to occupy.
