A district steeped in history and revolutions

A symbol of the French Revolution, the Place de la Bastille is a reminder of the famous prison destroyed in 1789. Around it, the Faubourg Saint-Antoine retains its popular, craft-based character, the legacy of several centuries of history.

Why visit?

This district is both a historic site and a lively place, bustling with markets, artisans and cafés. It's home to the Opéra Bastille, numerous hidden courtyards and passageways, and an authentic atmosphere that blends history and modernity.

A brief history and anecdotes

The Bastille was built in the XIVᵉ century as a defensive fortress, before becoming a state prison. Its capture on 14 July 1789 marked the start of the French Revolution. The neighbouring faubourg Saint-Antoine was for a long time a Mecca for the woodworking and cabinetmaking trades.
