A brief history and anecdotes
The Bastille was built in the XIVᵉ century as a defensive fortress, before becoming a state prison. Its capture on 14 July 1789 marked the start of the French Revolution. The neighbouring faubourg Saint-Antoine was for a long time a Mecca for the woodworking and cabinetmaking trades.
