VISIT THE BASILICA OF SAINT-DENIS

A key symbol of French history

Located at the gateway to Paris, the Basilica of Saint-Denis is one of Europe's most remarkable Gothic monuments. It houses the necropolis of the kings of France and bears witness to over fifteen centuries of monarchical and religious history.

Why visit?

It is a unique place where no fewer than 43 kings, 32 queens and 10 illustrious servants are laid to rest. The richness of its architecture, the beauty of its stained glass windows and the majesty of its tombs make it an essential visit for understanding the history of France and the Middle Ages.

A brief history and anecdotes

Built in the 12th century on the site of an ancient abbey founded by Saint Denis, the first bishop of Paris, the basilica is considered to be the first masterpiece of Gothic art. Destroyed and looted during the French Revolution, it was restored in the 19th century by the architect Viollet-le-Duc.
