VISIT THE CHÂTEAU DE VAUX-LE-VICOMTE
A masterpiece of the Grand Siècle
Situated in Seine-et-Marne, around fifty kilometres from Paris, the Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte is an architectural gem from the XVIIᵉ century. It inspired Louis XIV to build Versailles and remains a model of harmony between architecture and gardens.
Why visit?
Discover an exceptional monument, the fruit of the joint efforts of architect Louis Le Vau, painter Charles Le Brun and gardener André Le Nôtre. Visitors will be captivated by its sumptuous interiors, French-style gardens and fascinating history.
A brief history and anecdotes
Commissioned by Nicolas Fouquet, Louis XIV's superintendent of finance, the château was inaugurated in 1661 during a legendary celebration. This splendour attracted the jealousy of the king, who had Fouquet arrested shortly afterwards and confiscated his possessions. Vaux-le-Vicomte has remained famous for this story, which is as glorious as it is tragic.
