A haven of tranquillity in the heart of Paris
Over 4 km long, the Canal Saint-Martin links the Bassin de la Villette to the Seine. Lined with trees, footbridges and picturesque quays, it offers a peaceful atmosphere, ideal for strolling or relaxing.

It's one of the most romantic and photogenic places in Paris. The canal attracts Parisians and visitors alike for its waterside strolls, its cruises and the many cafés and restaurants that liven up its banks.
A brief history and anecdotes
Inaugurated in 1825 under Napoleon I, the Canal Saint-Martin was designed to transport drinking water and goods. It is famous for its locks and swing bridges, as well as being the backdrop for a number of films, including Amélie Poulain.
