An essential symbol of Paris
Commissioned by Napoleon I in 1806 to celebrate the victories of the Grande Armée, the Arc de Triomphe is now one of the capital's most emblematic monuments. Sitting at the top of the Champs-Élysées, it offers a spectacular view of the great avenues radiating out in a star shape.

Majestic and steeped in history, the Arc de Triomphe pays tribute to the French soldiers who fell for their country. Its panoramic view over Paris, its eternal flame and its monumental bas-reliefs make it a solemn and impressive place to discover.
A brief history and anecdotes
Did you know that the Arc de Triomphe took almost thirty years to complete? Inaugurated in 1836, it has survived several political regimes. Since 1923, the flame of the Unknown Soldier has burned there without interruption. In 2021, it was even temporarily wrapped by the artist Christo, attracting curious crowds from all over the world.
